  • Bank account details
  • Form 16 (if employed)
  • Details of other income sources
  • Investment details relevant for deductions under sections like 80C, 80D, etc.

Step 3: Download the Appropriate ITR Utility

Based on your sources of income, download the applicable ITR form from the portal. The IT Department provides forms in Excel and Java utilities to facilitate easy preparation of returns offline.

Step 4: Fill in the Income Tax Return (ITR) Form

Open the downloaded utility and fill in the required details such as personal information, income details, deductions claimed, and tax paid. Ensure all information is accurate to avoid any discrepancies.

Step 5: Calculate Tax Liability

After filling out the form, use the ‘Calculate Tax’ tab to assess your tax liability or refund. Ensure that all taxes due have been paid to avoid interest on unpaid taxes.

Step 6: Generate and Save the XML

Once all details are confirmed, generate an XML file from the utility. This file is used for uploading on the e-Filing portal.

Step 7: Upload the XML File

Log in to your account on the e-filing portal. Select the ‘e-File’ menu and click on ‘Income Tax Return’. Choose the assessment year, ITR form number, and submission mode as ‘Upload XML’. Then upload the XML file you saved earlier.

Step 8: Verify the Return

After uploading the ITR, it is mandatory to verify it. You can do this either electronically using an Aadhaar OTP, EVC through your bank account, or by sending a signed ITR-V (Acknowledgment) through post to CPC, Bengaluru.

Step 9: Acknowledgment

Upon successful verification, the portal will display an acknowledgment message. You will also receive a confirmation email on the registered email address.

Step 10: Track the Status

You can track the status of your ITR by logging in to the e-filing portal and selecting the ‘View Returns/Forms’ option to see all filed returns and their statuses.

Conclusion
